Junior High
& Senior High Performing Arts Opportunities
Junior High students are
required to either take general music or participate
in one of the performance groups [band, choir or
orchestra]. They are permitted to participate
in more than one of the performance groups if they
wish. In high school, students are required to
take two credits of fine arts [art, music or
drama], but again may take more if they wish.
Junior High Choir:
Choir practices are held three times each week in
order to prepare for school concerts, a church
program, a chapel service, Christmas caroling, and a
day trip in the spring. The students will learn how
to read music, receive instruction in proper singing
techniques and performance practices, and sing in
three parts.
High School Choir: Choir practices are held five times each week in
order to prepare for school concerts, chapel
services, Christmas caroling, at least three spring
church services, and a five day tour to the MSEC
Choir Festival. The students will participate in
the OMEA choir competition, continue to build
their skills in reading music, proper singing
techniques and performance practices, and sing in up
to eight parts. High School Choir members will also
be able to audition for a select group of twelve
that will rehearse once a week before school, for
those who desire to take their singing to an even
higher level.
Band: Students
in junior and senior high practice and perform
separately during the day. Band students receive a
credit for participation in class and performances.
Jazz Band: Students in band can also elect to perform with a jazz
band.
Pep Band: Students in band also have the opportunity to perform
with the pep band at home varsity basketball games
during pre-game and halftime.
Orchestra: Junior/Senior High Orchestra is a combined advanced
ensemble that meets during the school day (Junior High
meets 3 days a week, Senior High meets every day) and
also welcomes homeschooled students to participate for
a fine arts credit. The Orchestra has the opportunity
to perform in fall, Christmas, and spring concerts in
the school and community. Additionally, select
students are often invited to perform in Strolling
Strings, a small chamber ensemble that plays for
fundraisers, benefits, weddings, receptions, and
other special events. Students in grades 7-12 with
more than one year's experience on violin, viola,
cello, or bass are invited to audition for orchestra
the first week of school.
Drama: Junior high and high school
students have the opportunity to participate in fall and
spring plays and musicals directed by the drama teacher,
Kelly Beun. The drama team has performed "Once
Upon a Mattress", "The
Wizard of Oz", "Beauty
and the Beast", "Godspell", "Fiddler on the
Roof", "Cinderella", and "Annie, Jr." An elective
in acting is offered in the spring for high school students.
This class performs a production in the spring as well.
